Last year was the first time that I did Lent, and baked goods was what I gave up.
If you haven’t heard of Lent, it is the 40 days before Easter that we give up something for Christ as Christ gave up himself for us. Why 40 days? Jesus spent 40 days fasting in the desert before the beginning of his public ministry. It starts on Ash Wednesday and goes until Holy Thursday- and if you are adding the 40 days, its actually 46 but the six Sundays in this period do not count (and these Sundays do not count as a cheat days either, no cheating!).
To celebrate this Easter, Brent and I decided to give up something that we have found we really do depend on. At first we didn’t want to give it up until some family said to us “then that really is what you should give up, as Christ did for us.” Brent and I didn’t even have to look at each other, we both agreed.
I’ve never celebrated Shrove Tuesday (Mardi Gras is on this day) it’s the day before Ash Wednesday, also known as Pancake Day! Pancakes are eaten as they are made out of the main foods available, sugar, fat, flour and eggs, the consumption of which was traditionally restricted during the fasting associated with Lent. Brent and I both had to work a day shift and didn’t get home till 7:30pm but knew this was a great way to spend time with friends and have fellowship while remembering Jesus.
So what did Brent and I decide to give up for Lent? Coffee! And as shifts workers we will adjust. God is good, and he will provide us strength.
